Wrap-up report, WordPress Credits

I’m Santiago Durán, and this is my final report for the WordPress Credits program. During an approximate time of six months I have been working with WordPress, specifically on the polyglots division. I worked on translating the WordPress.org site, completeing around 300 strings. This report will explain how my experience developed, and what kind of project I worked on.

I did this as part of my community work for tenth grade, so a group of students from my highschool were selected to wotk on this. We joined the polyglots team form our country, and with our mentor’s help, we were able to start translating. We focused on the WordPress.org asset, and together, we translated the entirety of it from englis to spanish.

My first approach to this project was at Fidélitas University, where my mentor gave the group an induction to the translating process at WordPress. She explained all the general aspects that we needed to take into account while working on it, and we made some practice translations in order to answer any doubts that we could have. Due to this meetup, there was no need of using a handbook or tutorial.

The biggest challenge I went through was managingall the new vocabulary that the translation strings included. Many of these had some words related to computer science that were new for me, and I wasn’t sure what to do. Fortunately with te local glossary that WordPress provides, and some research on particular words, I was able to give them a translation I feel confident about.

Some of my contributions

Developing this project has helped me to learn and grow in multiple areas. I had the opportunity to share this project with a lot of people, which showed me the importance odf teamwork while trying to reach any goal, whether it is in the work enviroment, or in personal life. It also helped me develop my vocabulary, I learned a lot of new words and concepts as I was translating, which is always useful.

Skills gained

Technical: familiarizing with the site editor through blocks, writing skills, learning formal translation requirements.

Soft: teamwork, problem resolution, improving my communication skills.

I’m very impressed by how well organized the WordPress community is. Every aspect regarding contribution, new content, and site building tools is coordinated so that everyone can understand how it works. The communty was very welcoming, and so was my mentor. Every little thing was taken care of, everytime I had any question, my mentor was always willing to help, and she encouraged me to learn about all the areas WordPress manages.

I am looking forward to learn even more about how WordPress works, and how the community creates all the different tools that make these projects possible. I expect to keep track of all the new content WordPress releases, and how it’s community evolves and grows together.
